19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hardcourt

A resurgent the Russian player won his first trophy for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a torrid year, achieving just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a difficult moment at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-term coach his previous coach.

Currently working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought three-set victory over Frenchman Moutet.

It is Medvedev's initial title after the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard surface since spring of 2023.

Victory also indicates he has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one different events.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my two daughters simultaneously, so to get a title is really nice," said world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I won when my child Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

The player's defensive strategy and regular outbursts on court had caused observers to question if his ability to play at the highest level was finished.

However the athlete has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and play assertively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky opponent, taking 4 of the last five games to take the lead.

Both players traded break points in the middle set before Moutet, bidding for his initial tour title, seized the initiative to create a decider.

The opponent defended four early-game opportunities in a competitive third set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to secure the win.

Appropriately, Medvedev earned victory with a rally at the net, with Moutet unable to manage a return after over two and a half hours.
