"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated fans have also coveted the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

However the band will forever be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
